Introduction to Another World - "Through Gravel and Dirty Water" - By spacer
"Lightning forked in the sky above the facility, highlighting every dent in the metal pipes, every crack in the concrete walls and asphalt. The facility had fallen into disrepair after the collapse of its mother company, CogentSys . It had been claimed to be the dawn of a new age for mankind, that the contents of the shielded concrete-and-steel bunker just 5 miles from the outer reaches of London would bring an end to all the evils of the world. Famine, Disease, Mistrust. All would be eliminated by this new invention. For CogentSys , this was the ultimate marketing campaign. The rest of the world saw it as an ironic release from the vice that globalization of all major companies had gripped them in.
It is an underestimate to say that CogentSys hadn't then become the richest company on the face of the earth, as its shares sold at incredible rates. Nobody had even seen what was inside the facility. For the first 10 years, the excuse was that it was still under development. After 20 years the excuse changed to "Extensive testing is underway". Then the excuse stopped changing. The citizens of the world watched nervously, as year after year went by without word from CogentSys , while the fat cats at the head of the company became richer and richer. One day, without warning, the company shut down. No announcement was made, no redundancy offered to its teams of scientists and labourers. The fat cats disappeared, and the billions upon billions of dollars along with them.
The result was a kind of economic depression never seen before in the history of the world. Over 80% of all businesses collapsed, the remnants of CogentSys along with it. Everyone forgot about the heavenly release they'd been expecting for over 25 years, falling back into the bitter disappointment of the world they were now faced with to make a living from.
A s the rain poured down, a car not seen after the turn of the 21st century pulled up in front of the rusting metal doors of the facility, scattering the gravel not stirred for almost 25 years. The headlights flicked off, and a figure stepped out of the driver's door, his ginger hair instantly flattening to his head due to the downpour. He wore nondescript dirty-white trousers and a black shirt, stuck to him due to the rain. The figure strolled towards the entrance of the facility, quickly tapping in a key code with a shivering hand. The doors opened slowly sideways, stirring the dust that covered them, the interior obscured by bright lights inside. The figure stepped inside and the doors closed, leaving the stark contrast of his car, gleaming in the rain and lightning against the dark shadows of the surrounding metal pipes and pillars.
The lift opened underground, and the man stepped out into a darkened corridor lit by wall lights, and a single green control panel at the very end of the corridor. He walked through the steam pouring from the vents by his feet towards the control panel, CogentSys shamefully branded in neon green below a set of digits and letters. After tapping in a long sequence of digits, the smooth double doors next to the panel opened, and the room was bathed in a soft green glow, which emanated from banks upon banks of computer screens and monitoring equipment. The room he was now standing in was deceptively big, and covered on 3 walls with monitors and gauges, apart from one small opening directly in front of the swivel chair where the operator sat, which kept track of every function that the facility could perform, all available at the touch of a button. As the man approached the chair, beams of light danced across his features from monitors either side of him, reading his identity. " Welcome Professor. I see you drove here in your Ferrari." blinked onto the screen intront of him..."
